At Move-In Day Mafia, we do things differently. Too often, students from foster care or unhoused backgrounds are handed leftovers, hand-me-downs, or whatever someone else decided they “should” be grateful for. The message they hear, over and over, is: “Take what you’re given and be glad someone is helping you.”

Our Adopt A Scholar campaign is about more than meeting basic needs—it’s about restoring dignity and showing these students they matter. Scholars are used to people giving them whatever’s easiest or cheapest, but we do it the Mafia way: intentional, thoughtful, and full of love. While their dorm room makeovers remain a complete surprise, designed specifically with their personalities and interests in mind, the wishlists are where scholars get to take the lead.
