WHAT IS ADOPT A SCHOLAR?
Adopt A Scholar is Move-In Day Mafia’s program to provide personalized monthly care packages to HBCU students who have aged out of foster care or experienced housing insecurity. These packages are filled with items scholars choose themselves, giving them the support and dignity they deserve.
WHEN IS ADOPT A SCHOLAR WEEK?
We do our best to have the wishlists ready for purchase from the 14th-21st of each month. Please click here to be notified when the lists are posted.
WHAT MAKES ADOPT A SCHOLAR DIFFERENT?
We don’t give random items or leftovers. Scholars choose what they need, ensuring they feel valued and empowered rather than “grateful for whatever they get.”
WHO ARE THE SCHOLARS?
Our scholars are resilient students from foster care or unhoused backgrounds who have overcome incredible odds to attend HBCUs. They are the heart of our mission.
CAN I HAVE DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE SCHOLARS I SUPPORT?
To protect the privacy and well-being of our scholars, we don’t facilitate direct contact between donors and students. However, if you’re interested in mentorship opportunities, you can join our Student Support Team! A background check is required. Learn more and apply at MoveInDayMafia.org/volunteer.
CAN I CHOOSE THE SCHOLAR I SPONSOR?
Currently, wishlists are organized by HBCU chapters rather than individual scholars. This ensures that all scholars' needs are met fairly while still allowing donors to support the schools they feel most connected to.
HOW DO THE WISHLISTS WORK?
Scholars submit their requests to mentors, who create wishlists organized by HBCU. Donors shop directly from these lists, knowing their contributions go exactly where they’re needed.
WHAT GOES INTO A CARE PACKAGE?
Each package is as unique as the scholar, often including toiletries, snacks, school supplies, and personal care products—items they’ve specifically requested.
HOW ARE ITEMS DELIVERED?
Once purchased by our generous donors, items are shipped to Mafia Chapters at the scholars’ schools. Care Package Mafiosos (CPMs) sort and deliver the packages directly to the scholars.
ARE CARE PACKAGES MONTHLY?
Yes, care packages are sent out every month to ensure scholars receive consistent support throughout their academic journey.
CAN I BUY ITEMS FROM THE LIST LOCALLY?
To ensure every scholar’s deliveries are tracked and arrive on time, we ask that all purchases are made directly through the provided wishlists. As a small volunteer team managing nearly 50 scholars, this system helps us stay organized and guarantees no scholar’s needs are overlooked.
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE PROGRAM?
You can shop a wishlist, make a donation, or volunteer with your local Mafia Chapter. Every contribution helps transform a scholar’s life.
IS MY CONTRIBUTION TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?
Yes! Move-In Day Mafia is a tax-exempt organization. You can claim your donation by emailing your receipts to [email protected].
WHAT’S THE VISION FOR THE FUTURE?
Our goal is to establish Mafia Chapters at every HBCU, creating a nationwide network of support that bridges the gap between foster care and college graduation.
