The Miracle That Launched the Mafia

10/31/2025

Hey Mafia Miracle Makers! In the last edition, I told you that Move-In Day Mafia launched with miracles.

But I realized... I never actually told you HOW it all started.

So let’s rewind to the very beginning.

Now...just in case you are new here...

Move-In Day Mafia gives H.U.G.S. (Hope, Understanding, Generosity, and Stability) to HBCU scholars who have aged out of foster care or are unhoused, and we take care of them for four years with monthly care packages.

How It Started
It all began in 2020 during the pandemic when I created HBCU Bingo--a virtual celebration to honor students whose HBCU graduations had been canceled. I'm a graduate of Howard University, so HBCUs are special to me.

That’s when I met Eshontee Rowe, a young woman who was dropped off at her HBCU by her social worker after aging out of foster care. She didn’t have parents helping her move in. She didn’t have family setting up her room. She made that transition alone.

Until that moment, I had never even thought about students like her. But from the second we met, I knew I had to do something.

I didn't know how. I didn't know when. But I knew I was called to activate and solve this problem. I thought about it constantly. I talked to folks about it. It sometimes kept me up at night.

That encounter planted the seed that would later grow into Move-In Day Mafia.

The 52-Day Countdown
Two years later, on Juneteenth, I was in my prayer closet and was nudged to study Nehemiah, the man who rebuilt Jerusalem’s wall in 52 days. 52 days!

That number 52 stayed heavy on my spirit all day. I couldn't shake it.

Finally, I decided to count 52 days ahead. The date landed on August 10th.

At first, August 10th meant nothing.

Then...

Something hit me..."Call Paul Quinn College," a small HBCU in Dallas that I'd toured the year before and found myself totally impressed and drawn to their commitment to their scholars.

It didn't occur to me it was a federal holiday, so I tracked down the number and would you believe...

SOMEBODY ANSWERED!

I asked when their move-in day was.

She said, “August 10th.” I almost dropped my phone.

That was the moment I knew. God was setting this up, and it was go time.

But seriously, God...52 days??? What???

Now understand me, Mafia Miracle Maker...I'm an award-winning TV editor and producer with a 25+ year resume that I'm quite proud of. I'm a creative through and through, so starting a nonprofit was NEVER on my bucket list, and I felt so unqualified and unskilled.

But my obedience overrides my comfort every time, therefore, I hit up my volunteer team that helped me put together the virtual HBCU BINGO and got to work.

Plus!

The number 13 had been showing up for months in so many unexpected ways, so I knew we were supposed to move in 13 scholars.

We had no funding, no blueprint, and no idea how it was going to happen.

I moved on what I DID know. I knew God had given me an assignment. I knew Nikki Klugh Design Group had agreed to design the rooms. I knew Paul Quinn would choose the 13 students who needed our help. And..

We raised $3,500 from a raffle, but c'mon now...you know that wasn’t nearly enough to move in 13 kids.

Talk about odds not in our favor. Still, it was time to head to Dallas simply on what I knew and trust God for the rest.

The $17,000 MiracleOur first mission was set. Nikki, my assistant LaTerra and I landed in Dallas with $3,500 in the bank, believing God was about to pull a “two fish, five loaves of bread” kind of miracle.

I could feel the weight of every expectation. My team was trusting that I had really heard from God, and even though nobody said a word, I could tell they were wondering if I’d lost my mind.

Truth be told, I was wondering too. I remember pacing that Airbnb, trying to silence my own doubts.

An hour before shopping, I had what I call a business meeting with God.

I said, “Okay Lord, what’s the strategy? Which stores do we hit first? What do You want me to do?”

I was nervous as all get-out.

Then I felt Him say, Call Teri Ijeoma.
Picture
Teri was one of my former media clients. And at that moment, calling her felt random. I wasn’t in a “Hey girl” mood, so I thought I'd just text her. As soon as I opened my text app, I heard a firm "I SAID CALL!" in my spirit.

With trembling hands, I called and to my surprise...

Teri answered!

Nervous as all get out, I explained what we wanted to do. And here’s the wild part. I had no idea Teri was from Dallas.
Her next question floored me. “How much are you short?”

I whispered, “Seventeen thousand.”

Without hesitation, she said, “You’ll have it in an hour.”

And y’all... my PayPal pinged less than 60 minutes later!

That day, obedience turned into overflow. With the help of 13 volunteers, 13 Paul Quinn received decked-out dorm rooms, and the miracle movement that brought you here was born!
Picture
From that one “yes” in Dallas, Move-In Day Mafia has now moved in 109 scholars at 28 HBCUs and continues to care for 60 students at 25 HBCUs every single month this school year.

Now do you see why we are miracles in motion?!

So when people ask me how I walk around with crazy faith believing for impossible things for these scholars, it’s simple. I’ve seen God show out before, and I expect Him to do it again...and again...and again.

Maybe that’s what this story is really about. Not just my miracle, but yours waiting to be born. Because there’s a good chance that the problem that keeps you up at night, the one that won’t leave your spirit alone, is the very thing God is calling you to fix.

I know that kind of faith can feel scary. But I’ve seen what happens when you trust God enough to move, even when the math doesn’t make sense. From that first “yes” in Dallas, miracles have been multiplying ever since.

In 2023, we raised $150,000 and moved in 31 students at 5 HBCUs. In 2024, we grew again, raising $250,000 and moved in 40 students at 19 HBCUs. And in 2025, we moved in 26 students at 13 HBCUs; the amount raised for this year is still growing.

That’s why I believe with my whole heart that
obedience unlocks overflow. Because I’ve watched it happen. Over and over again. When regular people...folks just like you...say yes to being somebody’s answered prayer, heaven gets to work.

See you next week. And as always, like comment or smack that SHARE button so other Mafia Miracle Makers can join the family by volunteering or donating at MoveInDayMafia.org

A Four-Hour Delay, a Closed Pool, and a Perfectly Timed Miracle Meet-Up

10/24/2025

Picture

October has been nothing short of miraculous.

This month’s Adopt A Scholar wishlist totaled nearly 900 items, and you, our Mafia Miracle Makers (MMM), showed OUT.

We closed the week with just 208 items left!!! And several schools bought out!

THIS IS HUGE MMM...HUGE!

Picture

With over 60 students at 25 HBCUs, this means snacks, hoodies, and hygiene items are already headed our babies' way...thanks to YOU!

I say it all the time, but it bears repeating:

When this family moves, we move just like THAT.

If you're new here, Move-In Day Mafia is where dreams get the green light...one dorm room at a time. We exist to serve HBCU students who’ve aged out of foster care or are unhoused, surrounding them with Hope, Understanding, Generosity, and Stability—our H.U.G.S.

A Walk. A Patio. A Miracle.

From the very beginning, Mafia was launched in miracles. And the truth is, we’ve been walking in them ever since.

Now, while I was celebrating the miracle of #AdoptAScholar Week, I got hit with a memory of another time where God blew my mind with His laser precision.

I saw the recap video from THEE HBCU Bingo Experience, produced by Orange Strategy, Mafia's media partner. And the way I met the man behind that company still leaves me in awe.

As a former TV producer and editor, I've always known that the mission of Mafia is something special ...something made for television. We shot the footage, but deep down I knew it wasn’t time yet.

Fast forward to 2023. God started nudging me again, whispering that it was time to take the show seriously.

But here’s the thing: the mission always comes first. And I had no clue how we were gonna pull off a TV show AND keep serving our scholars. The budget didn’t make sense. The timing didn’t make sense. None of it did.

So one afternoon, I was out on my daily walk, the one I take to think, pray, and reset. But this day, I was dragging. It took me four whole hours to motivate myself to get out the door.

When I finally did, I got lost in my thoughts. And that’s when I prayed one of those bold TeeJ-style prayers:

“Alright, Lord… if You really want this TV show done, You’re gonna have to send me a production company that’s willing to do it for free. That’s the only way I can see this happening.”

I threw that challenge out to God and kept walking...and walking...and walking. I walked way longer than I realized.

When I came to my senses, I turned around immediately cuz LawdHamMussyGeezus, I gotta walk all the way back. But then I realized, I needed to detour to the grocery store.

And that new path took me past a hotel patio, and that’s when I looked up and locked eyes with someone familiar. It took me a second, but then I realized... it was Terry Simmons.

Years earlier, I'd met Terry through one of my young media clients. He was his mentor. Terry and I had followed each other on Facebook ever since we met, but we hadn’t seen each other in years.

So imagine this...

Terry lives in Baton Rouge. Later, I learned that he was only in Atlanta for business. He had planned to work out by the hotel pool, but it was closed. So he decided to sit on the patio instead.

At that exact same moment, after four hours of procrastination and one random Publix detour, I walked right past that patio.

Tell me that ain’t divine timing.

We caught up, hugged, and swapped stories. I told him about Move-In Day Mafia, and I half-jokingly said, “You wanna sponsor a scholar?”

He laughed and said, “Wait. Aren’t you turning this into a TV show?”

Now remember, that’s exactly what I had just prayed about minutes earlier.

Before I could even answer, Terry said, “Well, I actually want to help with that.”

I was confused. I knew him as a business strategist, not a filmmaker. That’s when he smiled and said, “You might not know this, but I own a full video production company.”

Y’all, I stood there stunned.

I had just told God I needed a production company… and a few minutes later, I was literally standing in front of one!

That’s how Terry Simmons and Orange Strategy became the heartbeat behind our Move-In Day Mafia show footage.

He showed up with cameras, yes...but more importantly, he showed up with heart. His team (looking at you, Carter and Jess) has fully embraced the mission of Mafia.

Picture
When 2023 rolled around and we filmed our next move-in season, Terry and his incredible team delivered a stunning recap video that still brings me to tears.

And when it came time to host our first-ever live fundraiser, THEE HBCU Bingo Experience, I didn’t even hesitate. I called Terry and said, “You in?”

And, just like family, he said yes.

Orange Strategy became our official media partner...capturing the joy, the laughter, the dancing, and the culture that night. And babyyyyy, if you haven’t seen that recap video yet, trust me, it’s electric.

The very company that showed up when I had nothing but faith is now helping us show the world what Move-In Day Mafia really looks like in motion.

A random walk.
A closed pool.
A patio.

And one divine appointment that changed everything.

You can’t tell me God will not go out of HIS way to pull off miracle meetings, and I can't wait to show you the decked-out dorm show we're working on.

Check out Terry and the HBCU Bingo recap video here!

Miracles Don't Miss

Sometimes God delays you on purpose.

What feels like procrastination might just be precision.

If I had left the house on time that day, I would’ve missed Terry and the miracle that birthed our show. That walk, that detour, that patio… it wasn’t random. It was orchestrated.

Because miracles don’t miss. They have perfect aim.

They don’t need our GPS, our hustle, or our panic.

They just need our obedience to move.

So the next time it feels like you’re “running behind,” remember... you might be running right on Heaven’s schedule.

See you next week. As always, like, comment, subscribe, aaaaaaand DONATE! MoveInDayMafia.org/Donate

Mafia Miracle Makers (MMM)! When you help us move in our scholars every August, it is just the beginning of our journey with them. It's the monthly miracles you help us manifest for them that create a more massive impact in their lives.

Ever since we launched #AdoptAScholar back in January, y’all have been showing all the way out! Month after month, y'all have either wiped the lists clean as a hungry uncle at a church picnic ooooor we came really, really close to a wipe out...proving that when this family moves, we move...just like that.

Now, if you are new to Mafia...we are a nonprofit committed to providing decked-out dorm rooms and monthly care packages to HBCU scholars who've aged out of foster care, are unhoused, or face severe financial obstacles. For 2025-26, we are supporting 60 students at 25 HBCUs.

Aaaaaaaand...

Here we are on Day 4 of October's #AdoptAScholar Week, and although there are plenty of items left, the Mafia Miracle Makers have already cleared out stacks of snacks, deodorant, underwear, books, and even cast-iron skillets (because these babies are throwin’ down in the kitchen).

Every item you grab this week is more than a gift; it’s a reminder to our scholars that somebody’s got their back. And I don’t want you to miss the joy of knowing exactly how your love is changing lives. So in this edition, we’re flipping the script because you deserve to hear #StraightFromTheScholars.

Let me introduce you to three of our Mafia Scholars who are out here turning resilience into results.

HK — From Houseless to Grad School

When HK first came to us, she was a senior at Bethune-Cookman. Brilliant. Focused. And homeless.

The daughter of two moms who stopped supporting her after freshman year, she hustled her way through college - couch surfing, applying for scholarships, and refusing to quit.

When it was time for her Mafia interview last year, she had to beg her moms, who had put her out, to let her come over to use their bedroom for 30 minutes. That was the only quiet space she had.

But guess what???

HK GRADUATED IN MAAAAAAAY! Our baby did it!

She’s a Bethune-Cookman GRADUATE!

And now?

She's in grad school at the prestigious Florida A&M (FAMU), working toward becoming a counseling psychologist for Black and Brown communities.

Her wishlist this month says everything about her journey:

🧠 A whiteboard for planning grad assignments
🖱️ A mouse for those late-night study sessions
💪🏾 A heating pad for nights her body is tired from pushing through

Because of you, MMM, HK’s not just surviving; she’s thriving!

You can grab those items from the FAMU wish list at MoveInDayMafia.org/AdoptAScholar by Tuesday, October 21st.

BK – From Surviving to Shining at Clark Atlanta

When BK packed up her life in San Francisco and came to Atlanta to attend Clark Atlanta, she wasn’t just chasing a degree; she was chasing peace.

Before Move-In Day Mafia ever met her, she had already filed for emancipation and lived on her own for two years. Her dad had been in and out of jail, but this baby? She’s rewriting her own story.

Now a sophomore, BK’s got her eyes locked on becoming a criminal defense attorney because she’s determined to fight for justice from the inside out.

When she’s not studying, she recharges by writing poetry, working out, going to church, and shopping...a whole mix of grace, grit, and glow-up energy.

And baaaaaaaby what a glow-up!

Our BK is on Clark-Atlanta's royal court and if you are familiar with HBCU culture, then you know THAT'S HUGE!

Her current wishlist this month includes her fave Dove soap, a cashmere vanilla candle, and snacks like Cheez-Its and belVita biscuits — small comforts that remind her she deserves softness too.

You can grab those items for BK and more from the Clark Atlanta wishlist at MoveInDayMafia.org/AdoptAScholar by Tuesday, October 21st.

RK - From Chaos to the City of Lights with a Stop at Disney World

When we first met RK as a freshman heading to Prairie View A&M, she was quiet but focused, with a dream that felt too big for her circumstances. She grew up in Los Angeles in a home marked by domestic violence, but she decided early that her past would not dictate her future.

This young determined scholar told us in her interview that her goal was to study abroad.

Ooooooweee MMM and guess what????

Right now...

OUR BABY IS A JUNIOR STUDYING COMPUTER SCIENCE IN PARIS!

RK HIT HER GOAL! Can you feel me beaming?

She's fluent in French, thriving in her program, and living the dream she once whispered to me during her interview.

Last summer, she interned at Disney World, helping code for the Princess Tiana ride. This dynamo went from surviving chaos to literally helping design magic.

Because RK is overseas for the semester, she doesn’t have a physical wishlist. Instead, we send her $250 every month so she can get what she needs while abroad.

Oh, and fun fact? Halloween is her favorite holiday. You can bet she’ll be over there celebrating spooky season with Parisian flair and that signature Mafia glow.

You can help RK keep thriving by donating at MoveInDayMafia.org/Donate ooooooor choose items on any of the other wishlists since we support 60 scholars at 25 HBCUs!

MMM, these three stories are just a glimpse of what your love makes possible—real students, real victories, real lives changed. From scholars studying abroad in Paris to first-generation grads now in master’s programs, and even those balancing school, work, and internships, every one of them is a living, breathing Miracle In Motion.

When I first started Move-In Day Mafia, I didn’t know how we’d do it. I just knew God told me to start.

And now look, MMM, our babies are leading student organizations, serving on royal courts, making the honor roll, acing midterms, and walking into purpose with confidence. That’s what happens when obedience meets community, when faith meets family, when love refuses to quit.

Let’s keep building miracles, one wishlist at a time (by the 21st.)

MoveInDayMafia.org/AdoptAScholar

Picture

Mafia Miracle Maker, when I launched Move-In Day Mafia, I wasn’t trying to build an organization. I was building a family. A family that surrounds our scholars with love, hope, and belonging.

And in every real family, everybody contributes based on what they can. Some folks bring the feast, others bring the forks. But when everybody brings something, nobody leaves hungry.

That’s what you’ve done here. Some of y’all buy $2 snacks. Some buy $20 detergent. Some buy $200 in gift cards. But each of our Mafia Miracle Makers shows up with love.

And speaking of family, whenever there’s a potluck, my people don't trust me in the kitchen. They just hand me the assignment for ice, drinks, or paper goods. Because listen... I can’t cook to save my life.

But let’s be real...what good is Grandma’s mac and cheese if nobody remembers the forks?

So here’s your reminder for the week: you don’t have to do everything to make an impact. You just have to do your thing, faithfully.

Whether it’s in your home, your job, your dream, or your community...when everybody brings what they can, lack has no seat at the table.

Let me know what you think. In the meantime, Adopt A Scholar Week closes October 21st! So whether you have a budget of $3 or $300, we need you.

From Bagging Groceries to Building Dreams: My Full-Circle Kroger Miracle

10/10/2025

Comments

Picture
Hey Mafia Miracle Maker, we’ve seen God do a lot of wild things through Move-In Day Mafia… but this one right here?

This one feels like His wink.

Because never in my wildest dreams did I think the same grocery store where I got my first job at sixteen would one day be calling me to help take care of my babies.

Yep. Kroger. Store 398 in Jackson, TN.

Let me take you back.

Oh wait...before we do that...If you’re new here...

Move-In Day Mafia is a nonprofit full of volunteers committed to providing decked-out dorm rooms and monthly care packages for HBCU students who've aged out of foster care or are unhoused. We've moved in 109 students at 28 HBCUs since 2022.

Now, back to what I was telling you.

My grandmother worked in the deli at another store. When I was fourteen, she introduced me to her manager and said, “This my grandbaby, and when she turns sixteen, she’s gonna come apply.”

And just like that, my fate was sealed.

The day I turned sixteen, I did two things: got my driver’s license and filled out my Kroger application.

Picture
That job was my happy place. I got paid to do what I already loved...talk to people!

Customers used to wait in my long line just to check out with me.

Kids would come running in, wrap their little arms around my legs, and squeal. I loved it!

And when I left for Howard University, they gave me graduation gifts to send me off right!

Kroger taught me service. How to show up for people with joy.

And apparently, they noticed because at seventeen, they promoted me to handle payroll for the city stores!!!!

At seventeen!

I was out here making sure grown folks got their checks on time.

Now fast forward a few decades.

The Call That Changed Everything

One random afternoon, my phone rings.

It’s Dr. Crystal Davison, a representative from Kroger.

She says they’ve seen what Move-In Day Mafia does for HBCU students and want to help.

My mouth flew open and I just started laughing and told her about my love of Kroger.

Because isn’t that just like God? To use something from your past to bless your purpose?

And get this… the very next day after that call, my dividend check hit from the Kroger stock I won at 17. I love Godwinks!

But let me tell you...they didn’t just drop off random donations.
Picture
Lemme explain...

The Mafia Mentality

The one thing that is non-negotiable for me when any company approaches to help or even donors, is that we MUST ask the scholars, "What do YOU want?"

We serve a demographic that has often shared basements with boxes. They are often handed items and told, "Well, you better be grateful I'm helping."

And that will NEVER be Mafia mentality, as long as I'm at the head.

I still remember the moment this outlook was solidified.

I was listening to one of our Howard babies do an interview after we moved her in.
Picture
The reporter asked her what she was most surprised about.

And she started crying when she told him she got to pick out her own hair products.

Hair products Miracle Maker!

The stuff many of us don't think twice about when we head to the store.

I resolved right then and there that our students would have a say-so on...

✅What they put in their bodies
✅What they put in their hair
✅What they brush their teeth with
✅What they wash their clothes in

So when I got the call that Kroger wanted to love on our students, our benefactor was initially surprised by my specific requests and rightfully concerned that it might limit the participation.

But after I explained, she easily understood, fully agreed, and then went ham making sure our reasoning was communicated to the managers. For that, I'm so grateful.

Because our babies have been handed enough leftovers in life. We give them dignity. We give them choice.

So we sent out a questionnaire. They told us what brands, what scents, what snacks made them feel like good.

And Kroger showed up BIG TIME.
Picture
Over 100 store managers came together to love on our Prairie View and Texas Southern students.

When Mina and I flew to Houston to thank them, I couldn’t stop smiling.

Being at Kroger’s corporate offices, I thought about that sixteen-year-old girl in Jackson, Tennessee—bagging groceries, cracking jokes, and dreaming big.
Picture
I thought about my grandmother, who set that whole job up like the divine matchmaker she was.

And I just whispered, “Look at God.”

The job that taught me to serve people with joy…

Is now helping me serve my scholars.

God loves to surprise us, and baaaaaaaaby, He did it again.
Picture
Thank you Kroger!!!! Thank you Dr. Crysal and Bich Nguyen for coordinating it all. And thank you to Mafia superhero volunteers Misty Robinson and Nicole Handy, who coordinated getting everything picked up and stored.
Picture
JUST S.T.A.R.T.
When I first started Move-In Day Mafia, I had no clue how I was gonna take care of these kids. None.

All I knew was that God had assigned me to love on them, and I couldn’t wait until I had the “perfect plan” to move.

Now, look at God...Kroger, Amazon, Best Buy, Cisco… multi-billion-dollar companies are reaching out, saying, “How can we help?”

But that’s the thing about miracles. They don’t meet you at the finish line; they meet you when you move.

The S.T.A.R.T. Principle
I’ve learned that you don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to S.T.A.R.T.

Stop Talking And Roll Tenaciously.
👉🏾 Move even when the money doesn’t make sense.
👉🏾 Move even when the fear is louder than your faith.
👉🏾 Move even when it looks impossible.

Because when you roll with purpose, provision rolls up right behind you.

So today, stop overthinking. Stop doubting. Just S.T.A.R.T.

Let me know what you plan to S.T.A.R.T.. Comment and subscribe. And don't forget...

The 14th is a few days away, and October's Adopt A Scholar week kicks off and you can buy their essentials directly from their Amazon wish list. See you next week!

From Chaos To Care: An Amazon Surprise for Mafia

10/3/2025

Comments

Picture
Hey Hey Mafia Miracle Maker!

We’re still playing catch-up after our three-month writing break.

Not because the miracles stopped…

But because there was just a lot going on.

First, it was my near-fatal car accident (still healing).

Then our HBCU Bingo Fundraiser.

Then came move-in season.

Then travel.

Then TED Talk prep (which was last Saturday! 🙌🏾)

So yeah. The newsletter took a little nap.

But I’m wide awake now.

And today, I wanna take you back to two moments that are still making me shake my head in awe.

But first, if you’re new here…

I’m TeeJ Mercer, founder of Move-In Day Mafia, where we deck out dorm rooms and send monthly care packages to HBCU students who’ve aged out of foster care, are unhoused, or navigating life’s hardest hits without family support.

Our people? The ones who make Mafia possible?

We call y’all Mafia Miracle Makers.

Because you don’t just give.

You show up. You pour in. You make moves.

And this next story?

It’s a celebration of what happens when the right people show up at just the right time.

Amazon’s Dorm Room Game Took Over the Bingo Floor

Let’s rewind to July at THEE HBCU Bingo Experience, our very first in-person fundraiser.

When I say Amazon understood the assignment?

Whew!

They helped us create an audience participation game called “Deck Out The Dorm Room”, and it was a hit.

Here’s how it went down:
Each table had to nominate a rep.

Amazon volunteers swooped in with boxes, each one holding something different: pillows, lamps, organizers, decor.
Picture
The goal?

Race to the stage and work together to build a makeshift dorm room with whatever you got!

It was frantic. It was fabulous.
Picture
And it felt like we had brought Move-In Day Mafia to life on stage.
Picture
How It All Started

Mafia Miracle Maker, I've always known that at some point, I would love to have Amazon as a partner. I mean, it makes total sense, right? Amazon carries everything we need to take care of our mafia babies.

But I thought it would be more like year 5. Instead, God was like, "#WatchMeWork.

Last year, out of nowhere, a woman named Terreta Rogers (Amazon’s Head of Community Affairs, Atlanta) started pursuing Move-In Day Mafia.

She left voicemails in inboxes we didn’t even know existed. Then she tracked us through our Clark Atlanta contact, Mr. Burston.

I still remember holding the phone speechless when Mr. Burston told me Terreta was trying to reach me.

She and a few Amazon volunteers showed up at our Atlanta schools (Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and Spelman) move-ins.
Picture
Terreta took one look at our chaos and (in my version) said:

“This is a hot mess. You’re making it too hard. Let Amazon help. It's what we do.”

Now, she swears she didn’t say it like that. 😆 But that’s what I heard and I’ve been clowning her about it ever since.
Then!

A few months later, she called me again. This time not to critique. But to commit.

She told me Amazon was giving us $10,000. That was her first miracle move.

Fast Forward To This Year

Amazon didn’t just send a few people. They showed up squad-deep. This year, there were orange shirts everywhere!
Picture
With the help of our Best Buy pals, they handled logistics at our Atlanta schools. They unloaded, organized, sweated with us. They made things smoother, lighter, and less stressful.

Plus! Terreta had another surprise up her sleeve.

Mafia Miracle Maker…
She presented us with another $10,000 check!!!!
Picture
I was stunned. I didn’t see it coming. My face in those pictures? Pure surprise.

And that’s the miracle in all this, Mafia Miracle Maker.

One year ago, Terreta was just a persistent voice on a voicemail we didn’t even know existed.

This year, she was front and center—rolling up her sleeves, bringing her people, and handing us another check with a smile that said, “I told you I wasn’t done yet.”

That’s not coincidence. That’s not random.

That’s God weaving details together… turning exhaustion into ease, chaos into care, and a giving voicemail into a $20,000 impact.

So when I tell you we’re seeing miracles in motion? I mean it.

When I launched Move-In Day Mafia in 2022, I thought partnerships with companies like Amazon and Best Buy were five years away.

In my head, we needed time to grow. To prove ourselves. To get “big enough” to even be noticed by billion-dollar brands.
But God loves to surprise us.

I wasn’t chasing Amazon. I wasn’t pitching Best Buy. I was just being obedient—decking out dorm rooms, sending care packages, and showing up for scholars.

And then God said, “Watch Me.”

In just two years, He’s brought the resources. He’s brought the people. He’s brought miracle partnerships I never could’ve dreamed would come this soon.

So here’s your reminder:
Your job is obedience. God’s job is acceleration. Keep building, keep serving, keep showing up. Because when you least expect it, He’ll drop a surprise in your lap that proves He’s been working behind the scenes the whole time.

That's a wrap. I'll see you next week. Don't forget to subscribe and comment. Plus, you can learn more about Mafia at MoveInDayMafia.org

TEEJ MERCER - TeeJ never set out to be an entrepreneur. She definitely didn’t plan to run a nonprofit. But after 25 years in Hollywood, editing and producing for major TV shows and movie studios, she saw a story that needed to be told. More importantly, she saw a PROBLEM that needed to be solved.

When she learned that HBCU students who age out of foster care often start college with nothing but a dream, she couldn’t just watch from the sidelines. Now, as the founder of Move-In Day Mafia, she’s using her storytelling skills to turn scholars into success stories one dorm makeover, care package, and miracle at a time.

She’s an award-winning TV Editor, award-winning author, and an unapologetic HBCU champion who graduated from THEE Howard University. Even though she still calls herself a reluctant entrepreneur, she’s all in when it comes to rewriting the future for the next generation.
